RKL translated a unfinished proto-AW story (Just In My Eyes) that was written at the same time as WEB SAO, and he commented Kawahara used to be a imouto-con before for some reason shifting to older woman. RKL's reasoning was that the pairing in JiME was a brother/imouto one, and Asuna being older than Kirito felt like it was tacked on at the end of SAO. I agree with this as Alice is older than Kirito too and she's shot up to be 2nd in line for Kirito's heart.
