I think that also comes down to straight up arrogance. They've been pulling the strings from behind the scenes for so long that they've forgotten they're not infallible. They've pretty much had their hands in just about every pot they probably figured something like that wouldn't happen because they'd be one step ahead. Of course with some of their recent failures you'd think they rethink that.
