He's the only one in his class. That's the point. That's the thing with classes in these MMORPG settings. Even a common, non-combat oriented class can be pretty vicious when mastered to the highest degree. I can only think of 3 possibilities of how he makes it work.
1. He applies modern scientific knowledge or gaming experience.
2. He may have discovered something in the abyss he fell into that revealed some hidden secret about his class.
3. He put enough effort into it and found some surprising skills.
