She knew Yukina wouldn't actually be
harmed by it, and it kept her out of the way for a bit while she was wandering around exploring the world of the past. Since that's all she was supposed to be doing in the original story, a quick time impersonating her mother would seem like a semi-logical choice, particularly since there would be no real consequence to being discovered other than having her little trip get cut short. The anime-original dragon that she had to be there to fight makes it make less sense.
