I think the US market is still heavily important due to the way profits are actually allocated to the studio, though the foreign gross undoubtedly helped. I think the recent Godzilla movie doing well influenced Legendary on okaying a continuation. With that having done well, it's easier to argue that there isn't some kind of aversion among movie goers for Kaiju flicks.
And Pacific Rim could have had a more effective marketing strategy overall.
Those facts make another Pacific Rim movie as not totally outlandish.
