Since when fodders win ever meant something? I am talking about major win. Hayama was an arc boss, and Soma lost to him. Fine, because it is normal for a main character to lose once in the blue moon for the sake of the plot.
But this time, Kuga is an arc boss who Soma really need to take it down. It would leave a bad taste to a reader if the main character consecutive failed against arc bosses. Plus, Soma needs a real opponent to show his power that he gained from Shinomiya-sifu. Kuga is the best and perfect opponent for this kind of setting.
