There is one additional thing that maybe should be considered here...
I don't know precisely how popular the Haruhi anime was on the whole. But the
image of Haruhi Suzumiya was insanely popular. It was even used by the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
It seems to me that this is one of the highest levels of brand/image recognition that an anime property could ever reach.
