Spoiler: I think that story about his date's late mother that was killed five years ago was taken from Phantom Hunter, so they do join the stories. BTW, they are are already near the end of the manga - if I remember correctly, just some explanation for the origin of the monsters and special traits of the Machida survivors wasn't told yet.
