He hasn't really been off the board though. He's been the driving motivator for Alice, while constantly showing up for other characters to talk about. He's been a heavy drive for multiple characters getting past their insecurities such as Renly and Sinon.
Sure, he might not be fighting, but they still act like nothing could happen without him.
