Anime-only here. So my impression is only from anime S1. The story & characters are really nothing special. Why people are fighting for these girls is beyond me.

You're not wrong about it, is just the usual seasonal harem that's going to be forgotten in a week. And yeah you have a huge amount of shipping wars, the next season is going to be even worse when it comes to that because the author of the manga made use of some awful writing to push one of the worst girls as one of the possible winners, at least she's now pretty damn good despite the sudden change on her character that came out of nowhere.
