There is no way to tell because we mostly see things from Frieren's perspective, who did not and still does not understand emotions that well.
Also keep in mind that Himmel showed compassion toward everyone, not just Frieren. All the older people that Frieren helped thus far remember Himmel very fondly for a reason.
