As much as I liked the story of Penacony, especially in comparison to the Xianzhou, the storytelling is still clearly in it's infancy in a way that Genshin has already managed to somewhat evolve beyond.
That is, Star Rail still falters in the concept of "Show, don't tell".
Penacony story as a whole was really intriguing from start to finish, but too many story segments felt like they went on for too damn long and at times really overstayed their welcome. I suppose they were trying to avoid the Xianzhou problem of not having enough Tell and also not enough Show, but here there were times where they went a wee bit overboard with Tell.
But still from a writing perspective it's a big step up from previous attempts and you can see the effort put into it, but for a game of continous storytelling over multiple parts, it's still a long way to go in achieving things that other online games like FFXIV eventually managed to do.
