You DO know that the two main characters are barely even shown during episode 0, right? Haruhi is only shown during the last ten seconds or so, and Kyon is only doing narration. Episode 0 is just them making an intenionally B-rated home movie for a school festival.
Watch episode 1... a lot of people that found episode 0 dry loved the rest of the series.
