Yeah, this isn't a romance title on so many levels. This is a hot-blooded mecha title. It's airing slot also speaks against that happening.

Unfortunately, that kiss may have also been the kiss of death for Kamina.
Just say "No" mecha anime heroes. 
That's why I'm a little shocked that Kamina went like Gai Daigoji and didn't hang around longer. Simon can not carry the title as the sole main character now imo.
