A couple things about this episode stands out. First off, it seems like for all the previous years, the tournament games were specifically played out in order for Fairy Tail to lose. It was almost if the rules were aimed to make Fairy Tail bad, like how they mentioned the games were played in ways when the best player in Fairy Tail for each type of game did not participate.
So it was no coincidence that now that they need to race to the sky, the Sky Dragon Slayer, Wendy, is not available to participate. I guess that explains why Elfman is going to be part of the team.
Also, there seems to be more teams in the tournament than there are guilds. That in itself explains why we see Fairy Tail team S in the intro, with Gajeel, Mirajane, Juvia, Laxus, and Mystogan. However, are they truly Fairy Tail members, or are they some sort of magical clones? The biggest factor to think the later is that they are probably going to compete against Fairy Tail and not represent them, and that Mystogan is with them, when he should be in another world.
As for the 2 new 3rd generation Dragon Slayers, since they've killed their parents, they will probably not end up joining Fairy Tail. Meaning, they don't add to the search for the dragon parts of the story so they are not needed. Go ahead and wipe them out, Natsu.
