That's the one big fear I have, that's always hovering in my mind when I read Cross Game. I don't think I can take another one up my rear from Adachi, like in H2. One of the few instances in my life where I wanted the time of my life I invested in something back.
Spoiler for Random ramblings about how the manga may turn out:
Btw about your previous comment, check out chapter 7 again. It was indeed Wakaba who said the "even then, you can't have him" comment.
Personally I'll think that'll be the main thing to keep her away from him (at least temporarily). Both Koh and Aoba have to "overcome" their feelings of, how to phrase it...loyalty to the memories of Aoba, before they can move on, which I think is the main theme of the manga (same as the slugger, who fekt guilty about his brother's career). Both of them are still ankered to the past by the accident. If they ended up with someone else, slugger dude and clone respectively, I'd somehow feel let down. Koh and Aoba together would make for a so much stronger image in regards to coming to terms with what happened. If Aoba were indeed interested in Koh, but didn't get together with him, due to the "you can't have him", it would seem like the past won over the future, which feels wrong.
Then again, I also thought I had figured out who should go together in H2...goddamnit
