It was irrelevant whether this treasure would come from the wooden statue or not, you still wouldn't be any more sure that it was the real thing. It was beyond the point. If they could show that the gems were real then they would sell it for a high price. The problem was that they had no proof. They would need a microscope for that or some third party expert to verify it's authenticity.
