And even if you could, I still don't think it's a good idea. As I said, it's big equalizer, and it allows those who choose to do so the ability to protect themselves.

That is pretty much the whole issue from a practical perspective. Unless you disarm the entire population including the criminal element, gun control is pretty much ineffective.
It's not impossible to disarm the population, but it would require invasive legislation and law enforcement that is extremely unlikely to ever get social and political support in the US.
