I also believe that the Hayate everyone knew is dead. His body is still around but with something evil in it.
As for a happy cliche ending, all endings are cliche these days. Both happy and sad, both have been done many times.
My preference is happy endings but that is just because I have seen so many sad ones. That is just me.
