Hakua's tragedy started when her mother died (it looks that her age was perhaps aroung 10). In front her mother's grave, young Hakua told her father that she believed her mother was killed by black birds.

"I had seen them, always flying around mom. Their number increased as the time passed, they had stolen life from mom.

However, her father refused to believe her.
Trying to do what her father requested, Hakua pretended not be able to see spirits. It must be very hard for a kid. Finally, she was stressed out and mentally weakened to a point and got possessed by impurity which took human form. Hakua went crazy, shouting some crzy words towards her father like "I'll kill the girl slowly, making her die just like how your wife died." Doctor told that Hakua was mentally unstable, might be caused by stress. Hakua's father believed that Hakua's problem was bullies in her school, where kids knew her past and called her liar for that. He comforted her, but still refused to believe Hakua. Instead, he told Hakua that summer would come soon, he would bring her to a camping and she could make new friends there who didn't know her past.
In camping place, a dare was held. The father told the supervisor that Hakua's health was not suitable for such activity while Jin, in fear of seeing ghosts, refused to join. Jin walked away, approaching the only other kid (Hakua) who wasn't in. They sat together on a bench for a while. Jin felt Hakua was staring at him. Thinking Hakua must take him as a coward, he tried to justify by claiming that dares were disrespect to the deads. Hakua wasn't very sure of herself but replied him with agreement. Jin then relaxed and told Hakua that he could see spirit. With some effort, Hakua told Jin that she could too. For the first time in her life, Hakua met a person who didn't take her ability of sight as a kid's fanatasy. In following days in the camping, they made friends each other. At parting, Jin made a promise that he would come to see her sometime soon. But it looks he didn't come and impurity returned and told Hakua to give up of hopes.
Years later, Hakua was in middle school. With all different methods tried (medicine, exorcism), her condition didn't imporve a bit. Black birds were still around, taking chance to possess her. One day, she got possessed and behaved like a slut in school. Afterward, her father kept her home, saying their house was under protection of the God. Those words looked true. Those black birds (seemingly) could not come in, but they waited outside of windows. Hakua, at last, mentally broken down. She saw no hope.
Quote:
Father keeps me in a room of very high. I'm trapped here like a princess in a high tower. But even someone wants to save me, there is no way to help me out.

One night, she decided to hang herself in the yard.
Quote:
Hakua thought as she put rope around her neck, "this body, I want to return to the god."
Suddenly Hakua heard a voice, "if so, give it to me."
The voice kept saying, "if you don't need it, return it to me."
Hakua saw bright light, which eliminated black birds in her sight.
"b...branch, broke?" Hakua found herself on ground, thinking, "such a thick branch?"
"and my body," Hakua stood up, thinking, "is moving without my commanding?"
"ahh, the body is so easy to move," she spoke, "and very cute. Finest quality for a flesh."
So, Hakua and Zange met.

Above is what is in chapter 25, largely colored with my understanding.
