We are given only two clues about the precise year--First is a reference to it being near the beginning of the 21st century (yeah really vague), and second is the fact that Valentine's Day falls on a Monday in "The Intrigues of Haruhi Suzumiya" (the seventh book). Direct references to the year are deliberately left out--such as in Disappearances, where Kyon goes back in time, he only describes the date as "July 7th, three years ago" instead of the actual number of the year whether in the international Gregorian calendar or in the Japanese regnal years in which it is year X of the current emperor's reign.
