with Sentarou-dad speaking to the priest where dad states that he had finally had a talk with Sentarou, so it wasn't just, "Here's a gift, sorry for the trouble." If the great director had shown us that scene, things would have been easier to understand.

Hm...I don't get that impression from that scene at all, i.e. the impression that Sentarou and his father had a talk about what had been eating away at him.

I think the English translation is slightly off. The father said something like "I was finally able to talk to him, so I thought everything would work out." I think the "able to" and "so I thought everything would work out" are important, because they implies that the two of them weren't even able to speak to each other before - which is the impression I got (Sentarou didn't even greet his father when he returned home). The rest of the father's conversation with the priest gave me the impression that the two of them hadn't actually talked about what had gone on before, that they'd just let it lie because it was still too awkward a subject to broach.
