You know, Sayaka is actually the "Madoka" character in the new Madokaverse, just with a much more tragic fate.

The Magical Girl team shown at the end of the series is Homura, Mami, Kyoko, and Sayaka. Assuming everyone (barring Homura) became Magical Girls at roughly the same time for roughly the same reasons they did in the original universe, this means Sayaka had to have been the one Mami recruited and groomed at the beginning of the series, since Madoka no longer exists. Sayaka was killed in a random Monster of the Day battle before Mami even got a chance to finish training her.
