And as the series reaches it's end (not counting volume 6), the volume was... Well, change that. The ending was a horrifying carnage. In many, many ways, carnage. Unpleasant Counter-current and Sterilization Disinfection are splattered messes on the ground, Melodia Noise was chewed to "something", Poison is dead, Single Room is possibly dead... All in one big finale of the volume. And for some reason, Ultimate Shield pops back up after being blown apart by Melodia Noise and is actually female.
One thing, but that character introduction page sure was spoiler-filled...
The first half to two-thirds of the volume was surprisingly peaceful. We get an introduction to Kajiri (Single Room), and Breaksun Hanselmine gets a proper appearance.
Surprisingly, the very unimportant (or so it looked) two partners who traveled with Guriko in the past makes a flashback appearance... Kudan and Kirigirisu... This is one part I like(?) about this novel. Even the smallest detail could be used...
Even the "horses" Melodia Noise dispatched and the destruction it caused was nothing horribly new. And then... dying. One after another, and then Rinne finally wakes up and is forced to drink blood.
And of course, now that "Jesus Chirst" has died and "Anti-Christ" remains, the 666 beasts (Insects) have awakened?
And it ends............
---
So now...
殺菌消毒 (Sterilization Disinfection) - Mina Saibara = Digestive organ
不快逆流 (Unpleasant Counter-Current) - Mitsuki Saibara = Excretory organ
最弱 (Ultimate Shield) (Literally, "Weakest") - Zekiguchi Nashinori
涙歌 (Melodia Noise) (Literally, "Tear Song") - Joker Sakaki = Sensory organ
一人部屋 (Single Room) - Kajiri Nikuyama = Brain
破局 (Poison) (Literally, "Catastrophe") - Breaksun Hanselmine = Communication
神蟲天皇 (God Insect Emperor)
-Single Room is basically deux ex machina
-Poison has the ability of decaying and distorting cause and effect, allowing her to be "invisible" to other people, protecting herself, and prevents her from interacting with normal people.
-Ultimate Shield can both transform himself and reconstruct others
---
-Breaksun was definitely a refreshing change to the rather psychotic or mad Unpleasant Counter-current and Sterilization Disinfection. Kind peaceful female who simply has the worst luck ever... Without even noticing it, she becomes the holder of Poison, unable to communicate with people, and by the end of this volume, without understanding a thing, dies. It's really sad...
Her singing really was freaky, but it carried a light mood, an enjoyable thing. And her random English too.
Not sure if it was a typo by the author or not, but her song at the beginning:
"Let’s kill her with chocolate. Let’s kill her with lemon pie. Let’s kill her with sugar candy. Let’s kill her with ice cream. Let’s kill her with funny jelly."
The Japanese said "fruits" jelly...
-And another new character, Nikuyama Kajiri...
Oh, Breaksun, what the heck is with this creepy name...
I admit, before I read this volume, I thought the person on the cover was female... But no, a guy...
I like this character a bit too. Sensible (kind of?) and doesn't go on slaughtering streaks like a certain pair of siblings. Then again, he isn't a combat type character.
His ability does activate in an interesting way- His blood. Love his line, "Ore no heya he youkoso".
He really does have a rude mouth, but in various ways, including his relationship with Breaksun, reminds me of Guriko.
-Yet another focused character is Joker, Melodia Noise. Yet another surprise, Joker is Tatsue (her power's root?) and Guryuu's mom. The crybaby and coward, who unfortunately has the power to sense everything, which proved to make her even more of a coward.
I couldn't hate her as a character... Don't know why. Don't like her either though, but meh... As, or even more, insane than some previous characters... Her past gets a quick chapter, and it was interesting (as the novel usually is).
The reason she always wears her coat was because her whole body was... faces (Love Song). And dear god, all of Breaksun's siblings.
She proved to be godly strong (then again, a lot of characters here are), using her power (through bells) to literally rip apart Ultimate Shield. Being the sensory organs, she also was able to steal away others' senses too.
But in the end, crybaby Joker only ends up dying in a truly gruesome way. Truly, truly gruesome.
Then again, she took out Unpleasant Counter-current, Ultimate Shield, Sterilization Disinfection, and Single Room...
-And the final main actor of this volume was Nashinori, the Ultimate Shield. I'm glad they finally showed his face in an artwork. But that turns out to be fake too, and he's really female...
Lots revealed here too.
Along with the theme of this volume, we find this person to have been a lonely existence too. Wonder what happened...?
Ultimate Shield's ability is further revealed, and boy is it cheap. Not only can he give people abilities like Ume's, but he managed to reverse Rinne back to normal.
I feel pity for him, but I don't like him at all. For one thing, he killed Ume...
We can't forget the other characters too, who played their roles.
-Guryuu... The mail scene was sad. I really wish they could go back to the happy times in the first volume. Come to think of it, after the first volume, these two really had few happy times...
Now he's feeling powerless, basically gave up on everything... There is some hope, I guess, thanks to his mom's quick visit to him. Wonder what action he plans to take next...
-Same as Kurukiyo. His criminal activity is as amusing as usual... and... Once more, someone he treasured (his lover was "Ume" too...) dies. Curses......
-Ume too... Ah-ah, I'm feeling melancholy now. Kurukiyo really was right, this world is full of melancholic things.
Finally realizing killing is a no-no (YOU FREAKING REALIZED TOO LATE! GIVE ME BACK KATSUMI!), she stays away from Ultimate Shield and lives with the perverted detective (tsundere?).
Yet after her emotional scene where we learn that damned Ultimate Shield is the reason her life got screwed up, she gets perfectly killed. Game over, no retry, killed.
-Guriko... Along with the Saibara sisters, there isn't much to say about these three. They chased Single Room and Poison, demolished the army, and fought in the big battle at the end... Except for one thing...
The Saibaras are unable to battle, and Guriko snapped and caused that cruel scene where she ate Melodia Noise. And finally, surrounded by Insects, she and Rinne look at each other.
-No point, but just mentioning the army Melodia Noise dispatched. Good riddance for their destruction.
