Probably because none of the students spoke to Mashiro at all.
And lets face it, Mashiro is not an easy person to be friends with; her classmates hate her and by association they probably hate Rita too
(you know how kids are)... All the adults think she's better that her... She needs to help Mashiro do everything everyday and on top of that have Mashiro's stoic attitude and seemingly uncaring personality... Multiply that with ten years...
