I'm just trying to point out the sole anime shown death related to falling, and trying to build a bridge towards the understanding that there are probably other (non-duel related) ways to die there.

To be fair, since the SAO player's themselves judge Kirito based on his equipment... so we can judge too ^^. We've seen heavy tank builds and light armor type player's, so armor probably does play at least aspect of defense.
