I'm in favor of a combination of (1) socialism (providing up to a basic time-limited safety net) and (2) the political system of Robert Heinlein's "Starship Troopers" over the modern-day (as practiced) democracy, but I'm not going to get it. I think the "dole" is necessary to give people that basic safety net in case of unexpected situations, but it can be abused a bit too easily, IMHO.

The analogy of people on the dole to stray animals is disgusting, I feel, though.

In case people missed this yesterday... Plane tumbled out of the sky over Lebanon
Quote:
BEIRUT – The first sign of trouble was a flash of light on the horizon Monday — and then witnesses said the Boeing 737 tumbled like "fire falling down from the sky" into the stormy Mediterranean Sea.

All 90 aboard were feared dead in the pre-dawn crash. Lebanon's leaders ruled out terrorism while investigators collected witness accounts in hopes they could provide clues. Aviation experts cautioned it was too early to know what brought down the Ethiopian Airlines jet — particularly without the black boxes.
Hopefully, the recorders can be found soon, and the info on them can be read. Thoughts to their families as well...

Back to the U.S. style of politics... Obama to seek freeze on part of the budget
Quote:
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Facing voter anger over mounting budget deficits, President Barack Obama will ask Congress to freeze spending for some domestic programs for three years beginning in 2011, administration officials said Monday. Separately, Obama unveiled plans to help a middle class "under assault" pay its bills, save for retirement and care for kids and aging parents.
A risky move, IMHO. The freeze is just on approx. 17% of the budget, and excludes foreign demands and obligations. Neither of the two major parties will like this, and the White House can find itself isolated as a result.
