Anime is unoriginal on its own these days. Things we call original has probably been done at least once or twice. Only a few series in my book have been worthy to be called GREAT. For example, ROD, it was an awesome and unique series. Using paper? That's new!

Also, the whole crazy school life thing, has been done many times before, in one way or another. MoSH is probably one of those series that just sticks out the most for some reason. But, in my opinion, it's unoriginal. Because it totally feels like I've watched it before. MoSH is like a mix of other anime from it's genre, as well as other genres too. A couple of anime I can somewhat relate MoSH to is Full Metal Panic! Fumoffu, School Rumble, Azumanga Daioh, GTO. And since MoSH has a lot of fan service in it too(SOFTCORE PORN PREASE), it reminds me of Maburaho and Happy Lesson. I'm trying to think of more, but those are the ones that come to mind. But basically, any anime that's set in school reminds me of MoSH. And most of those anime I've mentioned ended with failure, with me of course. Because it's the same old thing over and over again. It get's a little dull, if you ask me.

I'm not saying I totally HATE this series, I'm giving it a chance. And it's an okay series, but I'm not that impressed like how everyone says I should be. And it just seems like all the rest. Watching the same thing over and over gets old ~_~
Swap some nouns in there, and you'll have a standard template for a valid complaint against pretty much every anime out there.

The fact that the show reminds you of a lot of different animes is actually a good thing, because that means it's like none of them at all as a whole.

The most interesting thing about the series is it's unique view of the world and our existence. There's no love story here, no evil antagonist to defeat, it's generally a comedy, but it also deals with supernatural occurrences and topics of interest that concerns with the way people live their lives. I can't think of any other series that has all of the above.

Sure, none of them are original on their own (nothing is original if you only look at the ingredients), but it's how they're put together that matters.
To say that Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu is unoriginal simply because it's a mix of elements found in other animes would be like saying hamburgers are unoriginal because they're made from a combination of bread, meat, vegetables, and condiments.

But anyway, I'm not a Haruhi fanatic (mysterious voice: "but you read every single volume of the nov- *smack*), nor am I trying to change your mind. If you don't find the show to your liking, then that's unfortunate (maybe you can look at some other great shows of the season, I recommend Higurashi or Utawarerumono ^^; ). The truth is, Suzumiya Haruhi was never a mainstream title to begin with, so it either clicks with you or it doesn't. It was like that for the novels, and it's the same for the anime.
