In the original, the Yamato was guilty of causing volcanic eruptions on the already almost desolate Garmilas home planet. Now, it has done the blunder of blowing up Balun and destroying the majority of the Garmilas fleet. Of course, they may have justified it to Starsha by saying that it was for self defense. In this version, we also see Garmilas as Iscandar's guardian of sorts despite having opposing views in being an arms race. So there is kind of an irony going on.

I had always thought Yamato almost destroying Garmilas in the original deemed itself as an aggressor and in 2199 it is trying to contrast that.

Perhaps Garmilas losing its fleet will make it more of a humble civilisation.
