In volume 1 Chitanda mentioned it. But in the anime they didn't.

Spoiler:

1. in novel #1, Chitanda visits the grave during the ceremony with the Hyouka script as offering, Houtaro did not go.
2. only in anime ep 19 did Chitanda invite Houtaro to go.
3. that ep 18 story is from an unpublished novel chapter, it is not part of the 5 published books.
4. meaning we can't check if Chitanda actually did invite Houtaro to go in the novel or not.
5. not to mention the uncle is only MISSING at India and presume dead, the fact Houtaro's sister wrote letter telling Houtaro to join the classic club from India, indicates this is a possible foreshadow for future story, if the author cares to use it.
