Er, actually there's such a thing as an "
anti-hero" -- have you ever watched Code Geass? Lelouche was the MC but definitely not a hero. The MC is always the protagonist, that's what MC means, but he doesn't have to be a hero.
As for your second point -- if the best way to guarantee Miyuki's safety was to mercilessly murder a room of children -- would Tatsuya do it? What do you think the answer is? "He'd find another way" is likely what many would like to say .. but if push came to shove, Miyuki is #1. Morals be damned.
