I've not heard anything OFFICIAL about it only being 13 episodes - 26 is probably going to be able to actually incorporate most of the manga. The series is a pretty decent length for a single season show.
Anyways... less on being a commentary on who's sub is what, and on the episode itself...
I actually liked the changes that they've made so far in the anime - especially some of the early development that they've made with Chrno. Going to spoiler tag the rest, just in case anyone doesn't want to see it, but this is mainly anime to manga compairson.
Spoiler:
In the manga, up until about chapter 4 Chrno doesn't get too much development - he mainly exists as a sort of 'damage control' to some of Rosette's more exotic or excessive schemes. He's essentially the sane member of the pair who tends to advocate caution and that they not go overboard if at all possible on their missions.
In the anime they've actually downplayed his demonic nature a good bit - when confronting the guardian spirit on the ship in the manga, when it attempts to eat Rosette, Chrno unmasks part of his aura and threatens it, telling it how angry he would be if the demon eats his contractor - and since Chrno is a rather powerful demon, its enough to distract the guardian and allow Rosette to break free. Also, in the manga its Rosette who suggests that they use the Gospel bullet, rather than Chrno tossing it to her.
Of course, its rather amusing when Rosette headlocks Chrno afterwards in the manga and starts shouting at him about how she 'doesn't belong to him'. ^_^
So in the anime it appears that Chrno is a bit more active overall, instead of just being a weapons transport for Rosette, and takes a bit more of a proactive approach instead of just passively waiting on Rosette's orders and seeing if she needs help or not. The scene where they are also eating is amusing for the extra development it brings - Chrno the slow and refined one, while Rosette is the frantic and unmannerly one. A good bit of foreshadowing considering their relationship that will likely be unveiled next episode.
I'm curious what is going to happen next episode - seeing as about half of the first episode was origional material, and the other half was the first manga chapter, if they follow the same line then the second chapter will only take up half of the episode. And given what they've shown, it looks like they may be including some of the volume 2 flashback as well... and perhaps Joshua being introduced, given that he appears in the preview for a moment.
