Anyway, hilarious darkness and edginess aside, this episode was kind of... "okay, whatever" for me. Not bad at all, but the the setting was kind of boring. "Bumbling, naive newcomer joins high-level enforcment group, sees ~horrible things~ but still stands by her policies (deemed naive and soft by the others), gets a taste of the Cruelty of the Real World" etc etc etc etc... yawn. I hope this was just the intro episode and in the rest of the show the plot will focus on different things. Also, there's this problem that usually pops up with shows like this: who the hell thought it would be a good idea to send a complete noob to
this division, let alone put her in charge of highly dangerous people? Seriously...
As for the art and animation, the show looks fine, the character designs are very nice, except... what the hell is up with Akane's design?! She already looked horrible in the promo materials, but I thought it might be better in animation... well it's not. Her face is... I don't even know, she has this really weird facial expression by default, to the point where it's actually distracting. And is she really supposed to be pretty?
The animation was pretty nice as far as I'm concerned, though I thought the elaborate gun transformations were a bit too much. (Also, was there a point in keeping the guns in that Really Special Container that opens in a really special way, or was it just for the coolness factor?
But at least the guns look much better in animation than on the promo pictures. There they looked like the artist drew the characters and the guns were shopped into their hands later.
Oh, and the encounter between White & Black was hilariously narmy, with Akane's passionate narration.
