OK, this makes more sense. But I still keep my opinion that not Nanoha protect Vita.
My guess on why Nanoha said this. They faced multiple enemy so they fight back to back. By being taken down, Nanoha failed her duty and that might endanger Vita. This is why Nanoha apologized IMO.

With the nickname White Devil, Nanoha is still a human being, so she could be sick. The health problem is not necessary to be some seriously permanent disease, it may just a fever or cold or some other minor problem ppl may encounter everyday.
I think Nanoha was just overconfident. She knew she was somehow unwell but chose pretend normal. This caused undesearable outcome.
