I'm not so sure he deleted his character. It looked more like he reset it.

When some player in the beginning of the arc asks Kirito what the stats of his character where at conversion. Kirito calculates his playtime and takes the playtime of SAO in to account. If he was using a totally new character his playtime for SAO would be zero, but I could be remembering it wrong.

It seems Kayaba makes sure players' avatar having real faces. So, they will not have heartbreak from online dating.

I was thinking they got used to using their real faces in SAO and that's why they used there real faces in ALO.
