There have already instances of AI-equipped MSs being able to control the MS on their own, ie EX-S and RX-78.
As for them, completely replacing human pilots, watch 2001: A Space Odyssey and Terminator 2. Too many things can go wrong once an AI become sentinent and self preserving.
