CLANNAD is played much like any Visual Novel: you have a dialogue interface, the BGM, the BG, characters CG and such.
You just read, then click, read click. At some part of the plot, you will bump on some branch points, forcing you to choose one of the given answers.
Some choices can be a definite flag (meaning that if you miss this flag, you won't be able to go to "that path", etc), etc.
For instance, when Tomoya sees Nagisa in the courtyard, he can join her or not. If you don't, you will not be able to interact with Nagisa in the future, only for rare occasions though (so, you won't be able to enter in her route).
