Nui mentioned that if the Tokoyami was near, you could use another name, and in a sense wiping away your past memories and acquiring a new identity. Yoki , in the subs, was going thru the process saying, "What is my name?" followed by "What am I supposed to do in times like this?"

If he knew his name and then willingly changed it, that implies something different then just forgetting your name and only remembering "Ginko". Of course, facing a possible fate like that (becoming a Tokoyami) and the loss of a mother and mother-figure would make me want to forget it too.

But it was all for naught in the end, because he became a wanderer anyway.
