Well it depends of how long are the novel you usually read
No.6 that is 9 +1 volumes is quite long for me and i.e. Utsuro no hako no zeroth no Maria (a good, well paced novel In my opinion) will be 6 volumes and I think more volumes would be only confusing.
Anyway my worries aren't about the length of the novel but about the content. I like both character development and battles but I surely prefer the first on the seconds
