Because:
EN = English (language), so you can't use that to abbreviate ENding because some morons might mistake it for "ENglish song" instead of "ENding song".
END = ENDing, but it's too long and doesn't match the abbreviation for OPening.
ED = EnDing, doesn't make sense but it's shorter and it matches the abbreviation OP (OPening)
