Actually, the xkcd image above points to a key element that's missing in this picture: whenever the Democrats lose ground, it is the "centrist" (for the rest of the world: conservative) Democrats who lose, while progressive seats are generally safe. In other words, they are the backbone of the Democratic Party, though they have to compromise with their conservative party brethren if they want to have their party be the majority, and they are much more used to the notion of compromise than the far right. The American center is inherently unstable.

[/although the xkcd image itself is full of problems the deeper it goes back in time. I can just imagine the facepalms from American political history experts for having to define the Federalists as either Left or Right in the modern sense.]
