Holy- did I take a step into the past? It's freaking mayhem here, like in the old days.
And, we broke the 20k Barrier!
It's been a while since we last celebrated a barrier break. Feels good to know that this thread is still alive and kicking, even after 20000 posts.

Sometimes the curse turns out to be a blessing in disguise. I had forgotten the infecting abillity the flood part of the spawn had, but with Neltharion's corruption litterally burning away the infection, I can safely say "hell yes!"
Ultralisks may be tough, but they're no match for someone who took on a Bio-Titan.
Although she's aready out for a few weeks in doing so. >_< Ah well, that's Keroko for you. At least she has very able bodyguards watching over her.

Dweh, good question. I'd say him and Keroko would get along fine, probably joking around a lot.

Nope I don't think Mahou Soldiers would go very well, even though I pretty much made troops out of the Saint Guard.
What I did think that made the frames go well with the Nanohaverse is, if there ever was a society that jumped from medieval to transdimensional without all the scientific mess in between, they would have mages in stylish and effective Prada jackets like we've seen. But at the same time I feel that there is quite a lot missing, namely the various other elements that make up a fantasy novel brought forward in time.
Where are the knights in shiny machine armor on robot battle chargers? Did the advancement of magitechnology kill every other minor creature off? Will we only get to see tiny dragons raised in captivity, and not of the giant being that carved a hole in Keroko's heart?
I felt having only 1 element and throwing the rest away... Wrong.
What I really see in the Nanohaverse is a world where magic and technology are in total equilibrium.
The replacement of plate with magical mechanics would allow the laden warrior can carry more, and yet go farther and faster than ever before. Have both the dragons of old and yet see the new dragons born of the era of magiengineering. Have the return of faeries, elves, dwarves, ents, orcs, the works, but maybe with more Trek-kinese about them different species.
Call me stubborn, but that's my world view of the Nanohaverse.
I worked along this line and created Kha, the last Cleric-knight. And he has been wearing that mechanized armor ever since, as that was his trademark.
Somehow... That kept infecting everything else like Swarm over and over.
Now that you've forced me to take a closer look, I see no need for the TSAB to have such things. They never dive straight into the thick of a firefight, have long removed the footman strategem and it was never part of their tradition anyway. Mail for them should be their maximum, and Nanoha's a good example of that done nicely.
Of the entire Saint Church, most might have assimilated the Midchilda way of thinking and opted for lighter Knight's Garbs and mail-grade Knight Armor like the Wolkies.
The Knight Sisters never wore plate armor simply because they were women, and there was no way the most of them could carry the dead-weight effectively in the past. And so even today, they are adorned in their blue standard uniforms, or colorful Precious Robes.
But the Cleric-knights, I believe, since is it in character of them to cling onto conservative beliefs and traditional mindsets, will wear the opulent frames as part of their standard Knight Armor.
In the past, when they rode on live horses into battle, they were adorned in tempered gray steel affixed with seals, metal-plated books and sculpted eagles and drenched in consecrated oils; Now they still do exactly that, but with the change of the times, battle chargers have become transforming motorbikes, blades have become Armed Devices, and plate armor have become self-propelled reinforced machine suits that allow them to keep their edge in the face of a changed world.
Vexielle gave me a design that is streamline and yet retains the look and feel of the steel-cloaked paladins of old, and so at the very least, I feel it to be weird if the Cleric-knights aren't wearing frames. I do hope this passes for computation at least.

My gripe with Power Armors is not the plate, as we know Signum wears plated protectors, Hayate has plate sideguards, Vivio and Keroko have plate covering their stomach and sides and so on and so on, my problem with power armor is the gizmos and wires inside the armor that, basically, makes them robots on their own.
Why?
We already know that normal mages not wearing Power Armor can do pretty much everything someone with Power Armor can do, and then some. Why do they need a bulky armor with all sorts of chips that allow it to move more freely then it should, when a mage without it can do the exact same thing? It doesn't give any advantages. If anything, all the technollogy only makes it more receptive to breaking down during a fight. And we know that mages can match a similar performance just fine, so why do we need masses of mages wielding Power Armor for any other reason then 'it's cool?'
To answer your question of having one ellement, and throwing the other away... I do disagree that as a justification for Power Armors. We have two elements in Nanoha, fantasy and sci-fi. The fantasy element is provided with things such as magic, familiars and dragons. The sci-fi ellement is provided with things such as dimensional spaceships, cyborgs, clones and devices.
The two already balance eachother out as they are, if anything, Power Armor would be the one which would throw away the fantasy side in exchange for the sci-fi.
Barrier Jackets are the main form of armor in Nanoha, they can take on any shape the user desires, from skirts to swimsuits to knight armor, and they all do the same thing: Protect and support the user. Why would you need an armor with all that technojunk? Just create a plate barrier jacket! Same results, much cheaper, more sturdy, the list goes on and on.
You asked 'Where are the knights in shiny machine armor on robot battle chargers?' the answer is simple: They don't exist. In fact, they don't exist for the same reason shiny machine armors don't exist: Why would they have them? By the time magic became the main practice, they long since had bikes, cars and helies, why would they make a robotic horse? Just stick a mage on a bike and you're done.

Indeed. However I just remembered how mature six year old Nanoha was when she, Arisa and Suzuka met, so I might just wing it and write out the scene. Vivio took a leap into maturity during the last episodes of StrikerS anyway.

How feasible would it be that Regius, knowing and hating Jail, would order small scale projects with the purpose of countering Jail's threat?
I know he was openly denying funding for equiping the ground forces against the gadget drones. Probably on orders.
But as much as we can tell he really HATES Jail (especially because Jails Numba's killed his friend ZEST.), would it not be expected for someone of his rank to have something on the low down to pull out of his back pocket come Jail making a move? Knowing Jail is up to something.
The reason I put this out is because one way to wrap these little projects (Lawmaker and Crash's armor.) Together is that Regius had already figured Jail for a wild card, if not by the time Zest got killed, at least from then onwards. And needed his own pawns prepared, but they needed to seem trivial, under the radar of the floating brains and Jail.
Unfortunately, his projects would come too late since Jail made his move very quickly once he found what he wanted.
Now, I know he had something in the works... Einherjar... but I haven't the freakin foggiest clue what it is... (Seems to be mentioned as a trump card, but seems to be destroyed before its even revealed.) so I'm off to look around.

You know... Ironicaly, the Enherjar are exactly what you mentioned. His counter against Jail.

Spoiler for Something like this:
"So how did it happen anyway?" Fate was the picture of innocence as always, added in with a dash of confusion this time.
"Well Shamal had to remove the transformation spell placed on Signum for a mission but she was talking to me while doing so and she ended up being a tad heavy-handed while performing the spell."
"And to think it actually manage to transform Signum into that form. What a thing to happen." Fate's expression of helplessness was apt for the situation they were talking about right now.
"Well, personally I don't think it's too much of a bad thing. The effect shouldn't be permanent and probably won't hinder Signum from performing her duties at all. In fact, she might loosen up for a bit."
"Really? How is that so?"
Hayate managed a short giggle before continuing. "Well she even asked for a sparing session with Erio-kun since she got back.."
"Oh. Lets go check on them Hayate-chan? I'm worried the two of them might be going at it too seriously with Signum in her current form and Erio eager for more practice."
"Let's just take a quick peek since it's around the corner then shall we?"
As they approached the training room, it was clear that Signum was..well slightly more enthusiastic than usual.
"Going easy on me just because I'm in this form? Come harder at me Erio!"
"Erm..no! I mean yes! I mean..I'm coming Signum-san!"
What Fate and Hayate heard next was a jumble of shouts and thuds. Curiously, a streak of red light zipped past them at that time.
"Hehe that'll teach that red-headed kid not to underestimate Signum!"
Fearing that Agito's prank had backfired on the sparring duo, the two hurried into the room.
"Erio! Signum! Are you two all right?" Fate's panicked call as she stopped at the door to check on them.
What greeted them wasn't too bad in some ways, and yet worst in others.
Strada and Levantine were strewn a good distance from them while the two in question was framed in the center by Fate's view from the doorway. Though the two's position did leave some good doubts about what had happened.
Signum's hair was undone, the ribbon normally holding it in place gone, leaving her flowing pink hair to cascade down over the sides of her shoulders and onto the floor, over her sitting position on top of her prone sparring partner.
Erio meanwhile struggled for air as he found himself pinned by Signum in two places. While Signum did appear younger, her assets were still respectable and still managed to suffocate Erio under them. Though this was nothing as Erio managed to push his face out of them and the pink hair surrounding his head to a much more embarrassing situation.
Signum was sitting onto of his waist while he had lied flat down on the floor with his arms around her waist.
Turning to face the visitors, their response was expected. Well not quite.
"Ah Hayate. And Testarossa. What brings you two here?"
"Ohh! Hayate-san! Fate-san too! This is a mistake! I-!"
"Isn't this too much for relaxing Hayate-chan?!"
Fate was beside herself while Hayate poured lots of oil onto the fire.
"Well Erio-kun is a boy and he is going to be at that age soon but I didn't expect Signum to reciprocate in kind that daringly.."
And what's this?
Spoiler for Omake!:
"Ohh! Hayate-san! Fate-san too! This is a mistake! I-!"
"Say no more Erio. I understand your situation perfectly."
"What? No! This isn't what it looks like! I just thought Signum-san would be a better person to practice with since you're always so busy..!"
"I had expected you to come find me for this kind of things Erio. Does this mean you do not trust me? Truly I'm disappointed."
"I'm sorry! I'll accept any punishment you'll mete out. Just forgive me please!"
"Well that would depend entirely on you whether I'll forgive you.."
"I'll do my best so please!"
"You'll do well with this kind of spirit." Fate said her hands went to Erio's chest and placed her face close to his, very very close. Fate's eyes were expanding Erio from within, and not mentioning the effect her breath was having on him as well.
A jolt came to Erio's mind as Fate's hand went lower. Much, much more lower.
"Huh?! What's this about Fate-san?"
"You wanted to learn about women and so I'm going to teach you.."
"Wait wait wait! That wasn't I meant! I-!"
"This will not do." Signum was a face of serious business as she cut in.
"And why is that?" Fate stopped mid-way though cuddling Erio.
For a moment, Erio thought he found his salvation. Well it depends, with what Signum had to say next.
"He came under my tutelage for this session first and I will not relinquish this claim. Even to you Testarossa. What he desires to learn, I shall be the one to teach first."
"WHAAAAAT?!"
"Mou, Signum. Erio is mine to begin with in the first place."
"That does not matter. I shall be the one to teach him anyway."
Erio looked towards his final hope of salvation.
"Looks like everyone's going to have fun with this. I still have some reports to wrap up so I'll have to leave first. Be sure to submit a report about what you learnt later alright Erio-kun? Ja-ne!" Hayate winked as she went out the door.
Which turns out he had none in the first place, leaving him to fend for himself.
"Erio." Signum's younger face was sorely testing his defenses.
"Erio.." Fate's face was inching ever closer to his..
"TASUKETE! AHHHHHHHHH!"
***
"AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH-ompfh!"
Erio found his face, thankfully, to be neither in contact with Signum's nor Fate's but the cool hard surface of his room.
Realizing he had rolled out of bed, Erio heaved a great sigh. He had managed to solve the highly embarrassing situation earlier today but what was with the dream he just had?
Shaking his head and crawling back to bed, Erio swore he would stay off any more 'picture books' Chrono or Vice had to offer in the future.
Okay what the hell did I just write?

Lulz indeed. Signum-tan is making Erio's life even more troublesome then it already is.

It can also be explained a la Dune. In Duneverse, the introduction of personal force field-based shields made not only projectiles obsolete and laser too dangerous for everyone, but also eliminated the need for personal armor (while on Arrakis, wearing a shield is too dangerous because of the worms, wearing something like a power armor is ridiculous and stupid because of the nature of Arrakis itself).
Maybe in Midchildia, the ability to cast magical shields did the same. And if one was too worried over his/her personal protection, there are barrier jackets that does its job way better than a full plate, without crippling someone's mobility. (and living up to the sci-fi/fantasy trope that less plates = better armor class!)

*nods* exactly, this is yet one more theory against Power Armors.

While thinking about aspects of Crash's dogfight, I know he's at one point, going to come into melee combat on the ground with Fate. In which, I have him flashback to some lessons Fox has given him on close combat attributes, on the advantages of parrying, or force redirection.
Thinking about it, I can't recall a single Nanoha fight where the melee combat actually shows any counter moves, parries, force redirects, thowing, or using opponent's momentum against them.
Fate is supposed to be very good Melee fighter, but just how good do we want to put her in pure martial skill when we never see a good example of a force redirection move? There's a huge number of massive openings to be made when an opponent commits to a high force move. Such as Vita's overhead with a hammer blow... Shove it off to the side as it comes down and lay a knee (Or blade, or spell) into her stomach.
All blows I can recall are direct blocks, or full dodges. Both are physically intensive, and often wasteful.
Comments?

You're worries about how well the fights are animated? How abot we start worrying about the weapons, I mean, Fate is using a freaking scythe as her main weapon.
It's not the CC's fault though, its Seven Arcs. We can safely assume that the CC's are, in fact, more talented in the art of combat then what the anime has displayed so far.

I'm having a hard time with the current fights I'm writing; which are the Aurion vs. Hayate mock battle and the Grandis vs. Signum real battle...
The main problem in the first one is I'm getting in a bit of a tight spot with regards to Hayate's performance... She's, quite frankly, holding out quite well, if not almost constantly on the defensive. In a quick rundown without spoilering, here's her performance stats as of GenerationS...
Spoiler for GenerationS Hayate:
Range Attack:
Hayate is almost an all-out range attacker. As opposed to her usual nukes in most engagements, she uses Bloody Dagger and at times, Tesla's Blitzschlag in attacking one-to-one. I'm seriously considering giving her a slightly bigger spell for smaller engagements... but I can only think of Divine Buster (absorbed skill); but it doesn't seem to fit her style at all! I think I should make a new spell... And no, I don't think she would need an eternity just to cast something as simple as Photon Lancers or Divine Shooters if ever. Just a bit slower would do. (around 155% casting time compares to original users)
Melee Attack:
She's not good. She is NOT good in melee. And it'll stay that way. BUT. It's only in comparison to the likes of Signum and the others. She did say that she was no good. But frankly, I am not buying it wholely. So does she mean that she lacks so much skill that a kid civilian who just happens to know how to use a staff beat her?! HECK NO!!! I've been thinking about it a lot. And I've theorized that she is actually good, if only to be compared to normal people who don't fight in battles instead of Knights who are specialists. So she should already have knowledge to begin with, plus a year of improving upon it with Tesla's help. Is it fine if she actually does better than higher-ranked grunts at staff-fighting?
Physical Defense/Stamina:
She's rather fragile physically, since that's to be expected from her role. Not to mention completely lazing out of her physical training ([sarcasm]Um, hello? Do you even so much as STRETCH in the morning?! Push-ups?![/sarcasm] I know she's the Butaichou there, as well as being limite to A; [which, for all it's worth, held no value other than to write her out effectively off all save two battles {the last one being a lovely chock of vidclips showing Hayate floating around and nothing more }], but c'mon! ) in StrikerS while everyone else sans Shamal (nurse/doctor) and Zafira (butler dog ) were into so much training every single day for an entire year! But she's still in better shape than most normal people. (You just don't jump down from the top of a vehicle like it was nothing, like shown in StrikerS ep. 2) I'd give her some stamina as well; hopefully within reasonable bounds. I do hope it's fine if I said she's physically tougher than Shamal.
Magical Defense:
Here's the clincher in my story. No matter how much you say you lack in skill and dificulty in processing magic, having a crapload of mana while having weak magical defenses = DOES NOT COMPUTE! Does she really have a hard time tapping into her power so much that she would need an incantation for casting a simple shield?! I sure as hell don't think so and I'm totally not buying it until canon states otherwise. So in my story, her natural magical defenses are very good and hard to crack; at least requiring A-ranked (think Thunder Smasher of loli-Fate without cartridges) or above attack power to so much as properly hurt her minimally. Is it fine?
Tactical Ability:
Okay... She should be at least smart enough to last against even someone like Tesla for a while. I do hope nobody finds any problems with this. She actually sees thru a number of Aurion's battle plans in the fly.
Mana Capacity:
Need I say more?
Speed and Agility:
I'll give her good speed, but not good agility. So flying in a linear path should be no problem while high-speed maneuvering is not good enough so she should compensate with her defenses.
Spellcasting:
I gave her Tiara, so she now has an access to some spells by voice command ala-Reinforce. It's fine, right? Tiara's AI is passive, not unlike the original YnS so there should be no RH or Bardiche-like auto-saves for Hayate. Her spellcasting should be marginally better now as well, but she won't compare too well against Aurion since he can cast spells FAST.
It's hard. It's VERY hard. But she has all the potential in the world to properly cover up her weaknesses and eventually even go as far as holding herself against her fellow Aces. Anybody who wants to say it's impossible? Speak up now. They won't make the SSS-rank if there were absolutely nobody who reached such a level. (Not perfect, alright?) And I believe Hayate can, eventually. She doesn't deserve to be a shafted one-trick pony and I won't let her be! I'm going to show her potential here, and I need all the advice I can get to make it happen without much skepticism from others.
And once more, this managed to accomplish the feat of making me even more pissed off at 7arcs than I ever thought possible. -_-
Any thoughts? Should I lower or raise some stats? Any ideas for how much her performance could improve upon Unison?
|
No problem on my part.
On the subject of Hayate in melee, I think she was mostly joking when she said she couldn't even beat Caro in hand-to-hand:
Look at her facial expresion, not to mention Teana and Rein, who are not taking her seriously in any way whatsoever.
