When I'm down with a cold, the
only thing I can do is read books (looking at computer or TV monitors will make my head hurt), so for me, catching a cold is actually great for light novel readings. ^^;
But yeah, although I would argue that Owari no Chronicle is so much more than just a SF novel (the SF was never my focus anyway), there's still a lot of SF contents in it. I didn't get used to the story's setting myself until maybe 6 or 7 chapters into the first book. I guess it's the manzai between Itaru and Sf that pulled me through.
Really though, I guess it depends on what you're looking for. For me, stories where there's "love born from strange circumstances" is always interesting, and in that respect, Owari no Chronicle fits the bill perfectly.
It's also interesting because Mikoto is definitely not your typical "generic" male protagonist, and has a very clear cut (sometimes perverted ^^; ) personality. So rather than wasting a bunch of time trying to portray the male protagonist's feelings, like most light novels do, you get more time to enjoy the character interactions in Owari no Chronicle instead (which is half tsukkomis most of the time
).
To finish off, I'll leave you a present (motivation?)...
