Fluffy, maybe, but not entirely light: racial prejudice dividing families, crime, violence, a fight to the death, the possibility of the heroine simply fading away, poverty and hunger, loss of a parent, the potential disappearance of the other parent, etc., etc. All done in charmingly fluffy way.
