Long combos are fine, but like any fighting game there needs to be a balance between the neutral game (footsies, spacing, zoning, etc), the combo damage and execution, and the setplay (oki, mixups, etc).
When the combos are too long, you get Fate/Unlimited Codes and Under Night In-Birth, where the neutral game is just a single coin toss at the beginning of the match and whoever wins it rides the momentum all the way to the end with no point of return. If the majority of the game is just combo, 50/50 oki mixup reset into another combo, all the way to the end with no neutral game except at the beginning of the match, then it's not that far off from a broken fighting game with infinites.
