It's a hard question for me to answer really. When it comes to a mix of both, from what i've experienced, the male characters are always the bad guys, and I don't really like that they always get bossed around, shunned, insulted etc etc :S At the the same time, there are nice moments that both male and female have which make an anime quite enjoyable to watch, such as a confession scene or something similar.
However, having a full cast of just male or female can be just as good. I absolutely loved Danshi Koukousei No Nichijou and it's main male cast. K-On was just as good. I don't know how different those animes would have been with main male/female characters.
