I'm one person who likes Macross (well, not all of it) better than Gundam. I think for one, the Macross mecha design is a little more interesting for me, and I love how they shoot 10000 missiles so you can't see how in the world they dodge those things. The stuff about love and music overpowering alien races who can't comprehend it is also whacky funny. Gundam is just too serious...with lots of pretty boy characters (well, not all Gundam series have pretty boys, but still). The overly melodramatic tone of Gundam turns me off from it. Macross may be overly dramatic, but it's kind of funny the way they do it, whereas Gundam is not.
