I highly recommend following Gin no Saji. It's the author of Fullmetal Alchemist doing a coming of age slice of life. There's also Oujisan no Lamp for even more relatable "ups and downs of life". Neither have much focus on romance though.
Highly second Honey and Clover and Hanasaku Iroha.
