Chris from MAHQ and myself both independently came to the same conclusion of Amuro's fate. Unfortunately we reached a different conclusion as to what happened to Char. However, I only jotted down a note for myself about their fates, while Chris actually took the time to write out what happened in complete sentences, so I'll just quote him.

The overload of the psycoframe and the wills of all the people causes a Minovsky particle overload that opens a transdimensional rift. Amuro's consciousness is separated from his body, and he finds himself in another universe in a strange new body with the name "Ribbons Almark." Driven insane by this experience, Amuro/Ribbons develops a god complex and decides to conquer the world. At the same time, Char's consciousness ends up in another universe, and he finds himself in a body with the name "Gilbert Durandal." Having realized that his father's theories about Newtypes and space migration didn't appeal to the public, Char/Durandal devotes himself to devising something much more palatable: the Destiny Plan. And that's what happened. It's completely true.

Same thing as what Chris said happened to Amuro. However, Char was already close to death when the transdimensional rift opened, and he entered a permanent state of half death. He isn't conscious and can't interact with anything, but he can be reached from every universe in the Gundam metaverse. Characters from each universe can borrow his powers temporarily. 00 was the first time they managed to do it with a mecha (although they called it Trans-am).
