What actually surprised me the most is not the timeline setting (I've read spirit cycle, after all), but the fact that Mashima opted to use a character to address the readers. Does this hint at the complexity his plot is going to take? Time travel stories are always fickle and fraught with inconsistencies... So, while it worries me a bit, it's also a great move to raise mystery to the limits.
I'm sold. For now.
